What's Adam Green up to?

In case you haven’t heard, Adam is currently working on an abstract art film about The Lake Room. It stars Macaulay Culkin, Devendra Banhart, Har Mar Super Star, and of course all the faces of The Lake Room itself! You can expect to see this in early March!

In other news film maker Dima Dubson is producing a documentary about Adam Green, which he is currently trying to raise funds for via a really cool site called Kick Starter. It helps anyone in the arts achieve their dreams through the donations of fans and strangers. See the trailer for the film and find out more on the link below and if you want to donate to help get it made… go for it!

Adam will begin writing the next album at the end of the year, and we are working on a tour in South America for early April so stay tuned for more info...

Johnny Flynn on his Anti-Folk influence...

Johnny Flynn has revealed that a trip to Greenwich Village changed how he viewed songwriting.

Travelling to New York to try and win back an old girlfriend, he was taken to a local open mic slot. Flynn went on at four in the morning, to an uninterested audience of drunks. He didn't get the girl, but he was changed by the experience.
“Whether it was good or bad, I felt it was exhilarating that it existed,” he told The Guardian. “When I went back to London, my friends and I decided: ‘It’s alive, the flame is still burning,’ and set up our own night.”

Called Apocalypso, the night were forged with similar songwriters such as Emmy The Great and Tom Hatred. Attracting like minds, soon talk of a scene began bubbling across the city when groups such as Mumford & Sons began to pick up press.

“When I first moved to London, there was talk of a folk revival, with annoying names like nu-folk that made me feel slightly ill,” he said. “The truth is there’s always a hum of people playing folk music in cities. There’s just a tipping point when enough people buy one record that suddenly everyone else gets some attention.”

Sadly, though, Johnny Flynn has escaped the mainstream adoration which has overwhelmed Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons and more. Releasing two striking albums, his songwriting is fuelled by an upbringing in the country.

“There was often music and singing in the local pub. Dad knew all the songs and just needed a pint in him to sing them. It didn’t seem archaic to me, because the music was so alive”.

Time For Jeffrey

Jeffrey Lewis with Laura Marling - Brain Damage (Eminem Cover)

This transatlantic collaboration is beautiful! They have made the song their own, to the point where it sounds like something Jeffery Lewis would write!

This Is Anti-Folk!

I know there may be some concern with the genre and the musicians I am considering to be placed in it, especially as the essential characteristics of the genre are hard to identify because they vary between each artist.

I've been hugely influenced by the recent folk scene in the U.K. in particular... I think the Anti-Folk label is quite appropriate for this new uprising of folk music that is perfect for being imperfect.

“If this is folk, then I am anti-folk”
Lach

Here are some examples for you to enjoy:

I love the melancholy feel of this video… This is an typical example of ‘Anti-Folk’ – rough, raw with beautifully intricate lyrics..

There are plenty of good artists that play on "A Takeaway Show". I may post some more in the coming weeks... This is my favourite artist of the moment.. Johnny Flynn sings consistently thoughtful, witty and beautiful songs.

"I do like this American Scene at the moment known as Anti-Folk. There's some real talent coming from there I think"
Johnny Flynn

Loving Emmy The Great at the moment, and i'm a sucker for harmonies, so this is the perfect video for me. Emmy The Great plays anti-folk music with a unique worldview and clever, mocking lyrics- she takes on heavy issues such as pregnancy, failed relationships and death.

This is anti-folk, but not actually anti it. In fact, they rather like it. In an understated sort of way.

Welcome

Hi peeps..
My name is Darren Martin, I'm a singer/songwriter based in London where I study Commercial Music Performance at University.. I have been singing since the age of 4 and playing guitar since 11, so I grew up surrounded by and loving music... The most recent 'scene' to effect me has been the Anti-Folk genre, especially the growing scene in the UK, with artists such as Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit, Emmy The Great, Laura Marling, Noah and the Whale etc. etc.... So I thought this would be a great place to share my views on the music, post videos and any interesting bits & bobs that might attract the ol' eye balls for a few minutes...
I currently play in an acoustic duo called Talking Timber... We have been playing music together for just over a year, and have written and recorded a large number of songs, played gigs all over the country, came 3rd in the international "Apple Creative Contest" with our song "Coat" which is now available on iTunes..
